On Sunday afternoon, April 15, 2018, a tornado with 135 mph winds killed one person and caused significant destruction to more than 1,000 homes, businesses and schools in eastern Greensboro. Overall, there was more than $48 million worth of damage done to residential, commercial and institutional structures. About $30 million of that was damage done to residential structures, leaving more than 150 homes needing major repairs.
As part of our ReBuilding Hope community service project, GBA members renovated one of the owner-occupied homes that suffered major damage on S. English Street working with Community Housing Solutions. The scope of work included repairing 1/3 of the roof that was destroyed along with two exterior walls torn off. Two bedrooms, one bath and the kitchen were restored, along with the addition of a deck.
Mrs. Long has not been able to live in her house since April. As she shared with us, this has been their home for more than 30 years, raising her family there. She lost so much of her personal belongings however remains so thankful for surviving the tornado. She is extremely grateful for the help our members provided, allowing her to get back into her home for the holidays!
