From: NCHBA Director of Codes and Construction
Date: October 28, 2024
The effective date for buildings and structures built under the 2024 Residential Code is January 1, 2025. This means the following codes will be in effect for permits that are approved January 1, 2025 and on. Existing permits (or ones that will be issued before the end of 2024) will be under the current 2018 NC Codes. The new codes will be the following:
- 2024 NC Residential Code
- 2023 NC Electrical Code
- 2024 NC Administrative Code and Policies
These three codes will be what builders, homeowners, inspectors, developers, engineers, etc. will need to comply with the unpublished version links are below. Hopefully, these will be published soon (asap). This includes the new sheathing inspection for permits issued under the new codes for 140-150 mph wind zones.

Administrative: www.oah.nc.gov/012024-bcc-admin-code-final-revised-rule/open
The NC Building Code (and the other commercial codes) are not subject to the statutes the bind the effective date as the Residential Code does; therefore, the NC Building Code Council will allow the current 2018 NC Building Codes (commercial) to be used until June 30, 2025. The 2024 NC Building Codes (commercial) can still be used starting January 1, 2025; and will be the only codes starting July 1, 2025 that can be used.
The NC Home Builders Association will continue to attend and monitor this situation…and advise when the 2024 NC Residential Code books are available.
